Rise of the Technology Class

These conversations are between students from Ecuador, India, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Spain and the US who see technology serving a higher purpose: A counter-culture to their predecessors. This is evidence of a new type of generative class who apply technology to their creativity with art, music, science and involvement within the community. Their activity is transparent and active to our evolving civility. These multinational students are socially conscious storytellers. The Moderator of this conversation, Michael Davis is an Executive MBA graduate of Steinbeis University Germany, The Berlin School of Creative Leadership.

Karla – The Evolution

The function of the Honda Clarity

The function of the Honda Clarity

My dad was always a car fan, actually my whole family has always had an obsession with cars. Since I became part of YTC, I think i have become more of a car lover. I loved becoming part of a group that had a function to it. Unlike other groups in school, the Cyber Service actually provided a service to the community besides helping itself. I mean you look at other clubs after school, and they were moslty social groups, besides the math clubs and all that. This group actually has a mission, not only to be part of a whole community around the world to enhance our possibilities with technology, but help the community, those left behind, to come with us as well. By helping the kids in town like Cicero, where there is a ton of diversity, we see that the ones that have the easiest reach to technology are not the only ones to enhance it.
The whole idea of an organization like this taught me that there’s more to our selfish ideals of advancement. Technology is sufficient only when the people know how to use it, when it becomes available, and it easily sensed by the public who is willing to invest in it. I mean, a big example is cars. Now with the whole recession thing in the US, and the whole environmental concern, people need to find technologies that support both their pockets and their thirst to conserve the environment. Overall, I have learned to appreciate the technology changes. Before it was not a question of, “Ohh, that’s too expensive, who’s gonna buy that?” My mentallity now is, “Wow, that’s good, I wonder just how much time it needs to become affordable, and is able to reach the community.”

from Veena – Technology and War

rise of the technology class michael davis imc2

Over the years as times have changed and technological advances have been made, the face of war has also changed. Before World War I, fighting was done with bayonets and muskets, which could only fire one bullet before being reloaded. Weapons like these made war very personal, because the two sides had to be within a close range to use them.

As technology has advanced, war has become extremely impersonal. We can now fire missiles into other countries hundreds of miles away. We can use airplanes to fly over and drop bombs on the enemy. The invention of guns that can shoot much farther and carry multiple bullets means that soldiers no longer have to look into the eyes of the people they kill. Instead of being out with the soldiers, generals can now sit safely miles away from the fighting and issue orders by phone. All of these technological advances, and more, take the personal feeling out of war because they make it so the people involved do not know who they are killing.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? It could be said that this impersonal feeling helps because it doesn’t let the soldiers’ morality get in the way… But isn’t our morality what makes us human? Technology has taken the human element out of war. This is a terrifying thought to me. With all the “weapons of mass destruction” we have that could easily take out half the world (or more), I think the last thing the world needs is a loss of morality. I guess what I’m getting at here is that technology can save the world, but it can also very easily and quickly destroy it.

Ryan – David Letterman v. Palin Family

letterman-palin

when i heard that the Palin family had released a statement attacking David Letterman for a joke he made on his show, i was a little frustrated. Late night talk shows are about comedy and jokes that you can’t say on the 5 o’clock news. I feel like the Palin family was just angry that they were the butt of another joke and used their “popularity” to share their anger. This is a prime example of how people are over sensitive to things in America. People can’t take a joke nowadays. Was it a joke in poor taste? Ahh yeah, but it’s late night T.V. its not like Letterman was making fliers with that joke on in and handing it out to kinds in grammar school. Aren’t we a little too sensitive?

MODERATOR NOTE:  Did you see the show or see all the hype on blogs, web news sites and YouTube? Great post, thank you.
