Rise of the Technology Class

These conversations are between students from Ecuador, India, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Spain and the US who see technology serving a higher purpose: A counter-culture to their predecessors. This is evidence of a new type of generative class who apply technology to their creativity with art, music, science and involvement within the community. Their activity is transparent and active to our evolving civility. These multinational students are socially conscious storytellers. The Moderator of this conversation, Michael Davis is an Executive MBA graduate of Steinbeis University Germany, The Berlin School of Creative Leadership.

Caridad – electronic pets not good for children

The evolution of technology has led to interactive pets.pet1

They have changed much over the years, from toys, to robots that talk to you as they interact, to other dolls that tell a story if you prefer, etc.

pet2There are many types: dogs, cats, birds, monkeys,  robots and even invented animals! These toys are designed to entertain children? Or adults? And they have large amounts of circuitry whose power supply is usually a battery or rechargeable battery.

I think that young children are more exposed to these robot toys and other consoles at increasingly younger ages. I do not think this is an appropriate way for for children to interact! In my opinion, this is not healthy.

Here is one that serves drinks!

Cristo – Buried in co2 is possible?

Recently, the experts talk of alternatives to meet energy demand worldwide. Some of the names that are mentioned: nuclear, solar, wind, renewable.

And now, the new alternative is to capture and store carbon dioxide.

This technology requires trapping emissions of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels in power plants and inject it into underground layers of the Earth. It is believed that CO2 emissions from China and India will double by 2030.

According to David King,  if we continue emitting carbon dioxide at current levels we are facing an enormous risk to the planet. Professor King has been an open supporter of nuclear power as a solution to reduce carbon emissions. But now says it is essential that the power plants around the world adopt the technology for storage of CO2. Particularly, he says, in large developing countries such as China, India or Brazil, which inevitably emit huge quantities of CO2 when consumed its huge coal reserves.

“This will be catastrophic, unless we can persuade these countries to catch CO2 emissions at its power plants and stored underground in porous rocks,” said King.

The British government announced it will study the technology being developed by a consortium of energy firms, including British Petroleum, BP.

According to BP, this technology can save the same amount of CO2 that they produce 250,000 cars a year.

Salvador – A World Change

That´s like a Nikolas_The Flip-Side post comment. Of course. We (young people arround the world) should change the world. We have to eliminate the injustices that there are arround the world, eradicating poverty, ensuring that all we are equal, that people won´t be more rich than other person, no more powerful than other people, no difference between countries, that everyone study on the school. But we must change many things, how we live, think, change the policy, the economy (although that is giving us many problems in all countries of the world, and we continue supporting the economy, I don´t know why) We have to change everything, that not have wars and discrimination, racism or hunger in the world. If we do nothing, we´ll destroy the world. Technology, communication, Internet, media are essential to say to the people “We have to change the world”. It is also necessary to take care of the planet and animals, plants, everything in it, so we need to find a form of development that does not damage the environment, take care, there is a radical change, reinventing everything all the technology and research and create all that we have now but that doesn´t pollute.

Karla – The Evolution

The function of the Honda Clarity

The function of the Honda Clarity

My dad was always a car fan, actually my whole family has always had an obsession with cars. Since I became part of YTC, I think i have become more of a car lover. I loved becoming part of a group that had a function to it. Unlike other groups in school, the Cyber Service actually provided a service to the community besides helping itself. I mean you look at other clubs after school, and they were moslty social groups, besides the math clubs and all that. This group actually has a mission, not only to be part of a whole community around the world to enhance our possibilities with technology, but help the community, those left behind, to come with us as well. By helping the kids in town like Cicero, where there is a ton of diversity, we see that the ones that have the easiest reach to technology are not the only ones to enhance it.
The whole idea of an organization like this taught me that there’s more to our selfish ideals of advancement. Technology is sufficient only when the people know how to use it, when it becomes available, and it easily sensed by the public who is willing to invest in it. I mean, a big example is cars. Now with the whole recession thing in the US, and the whole environmental concern, people need to find technologies that support both their pockets and their thirst to conserve the environment. Overall, I have learned to appreciate the technology changes. Before it was not a question of, “Ohh, that’s too expensive, who’s gonna buy that?” My mentallity now is, “Wow, that’s good, I wonder just how much time it needs to become affordable, and is able to reach the community.”

Veena – Technology in Chicago

cool car

I feel that in Chicago, there are two attitudes among the general public towards technology. There are those who think that technology’s purpose is to make life for themselves easier, and those who believe that the purpose is to benefit the world as a whole. It seems that for every person I see driving a Smart Car, I see two or three in a gas-guzzling SUV. Although I often wish I had one of those 4-wheel drive monsters in January when I’m stuck in 2 feet of snow, I know that that technology is impractical for the daily life of a Chicago resident. I find it surprising how few hybrids you actually see on the streets, for all the talk there is about them, you would expect to see a lot more. While Chicago and the rest of the U.S. are still trying to wrap their heads around electricity, France has developed the technology to create the Air Car. Has anyone else heard about this? It runs on compressed air! If everyone in Chicago had one of those, no one would care that we have the highest gas prices in the nation!

Here is a short news report about the Air Car:

Joshua – Apple killer? Nope!

1984 this “keyboard” was the computer!

I bet people in high school had no idea what a computer was…old old old (old) school. No wonder my mom can text! I look forward to the students from around the world checking in next week. Cool.3581592834_36f4a24811
