Rise of the Technology Class

These conversations are between students from Ecuador, India, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Spain and the US who see technology serving a higher purpose: A counter-culture to their predecessors. This is evidence of a new type of generative class who apply technology to their creativity with art, music, science and involvement within the community. Their activity is transparent and active to our evolving civility. These multinational students are socially conscious storytellers. The Moderator of this conversation, Michael Davis is an Executive MBA graduate of Steinbeis University Germany, The Berlin School of Creative Leadership.

Caridad – electronic pets not good for children

The evolution of technology has led to interactive pets.pet1

They have changed much over the years, from toys, to robots that talk to you as they interact, to other dolls that tell a story if you prefer, etc.

pet2There are many types: dogs, cats, birds, monkeys,  robots and even invented animals! These toys are designed to entertain children? Or adults? And they have large amounts of circuitry whose power supply is usually a battery or rechargeable battery.

I think that young children are more exposed to these robot toys and other consoles at increasingly younger ages. I do not think this is an appropriate way for for children to interact! In my opinion, this is not healthy.

Here is one that serves drinks!

Veena – Nature and Technology

It seems like the more advanced technology gets, the less we need to interact with nature.

In our fully-insulated homes we are immune to the extreme weather outside. It was nearly 90F (34C) degrees in Chicago today, but my room was nice and cool at 70F (21C) degrees. Instead of taking long walks or going for a run outside, we go to gyms and health clubs to work out on machines. These things are designed to make life easier… and they do, without a doubt. But it also means that we spend less time outside and less time exploring an environment with its own amazing technology that wasn’t created by humans.

On one hand I feel like we should all spend more time in nature and less time inside with our own technology (which I am extremely guilty of)… But on the other hand, I feel like… it’s the 21st century. Men have been to the moon and back many times now, we have cured diseases that once killed millions of people, and we have figured out a way to alter peoples’ appearances with surgery so that they are unrecognizable… After all these advances in technology, science, etc… Why hasn’t anyone come up with a good way to keep spiders from coming into my room?

Nicole – Graffiti in Quito, Ecuador

IMG_0364.JPGGraffiti is considered as an art in some places around the world. however, here in Quito it is not, at least not so much as an art, but in a way of people of expressing themselves.

I’ve seen in my city, few walls that are amazing works of art. one of these walls were given to young people to do what they wanted to do.  the finale product was great and you can see almost their personalities through their way of painting. nevertheless there are thousands of walls in Quito that, personally I don’t consider an art, but a way of people of expressing about society. most of these walls are messages talking about politics. young people expressing what they think, what they hate. sometimes these messages can be rude, senseless, funny, etc.

I agree with the fact that people wants to express how they feel about their societies, but I really don’t like the tools some of them are using. all this unity, all this energy should be focused in an other way because it seems that they forget that its our city we are talking about, not a blank page.

Young people’s opinion is important, but our city image to tourists and the rest of the world is important too.

Quito is a beautiful city with intelligent people who want to express themselves and make a change around them. however they need to do it in the right way, with the right tools.

Nikolas – The Flip-Side

My last two posts have been about the cons of technology and how it is a burden on our society. But then I thought about how it has benefited me in the past. I am a member of a club at my school that fights for peace in Darfur, Sudan, and some of our jobs consist of sponsoring schools, and pressuring the government to take action. Through our resources on-line and through email, we have been able to be a voice for them and pass on there experiences and fulfill there needs. The fact that technology has come this far in communication and has made it possible and easier to have even high school kids make a difference blows my mind and makes me motivated to do more to help and play a roll in the world.
